When studying politics, it is imperative to be able to think critically when viewing media sources. Although some sources are more biased than others, biases are everywhere in the media. Therefore, it is incredibly important to think critically when reading media sources that discuss politics and current events. Some questions to critically access a news article providing certain information would be,
1. Is
this a valid/ reliable source?
2. How
biased (generally) is this source?
3. What agenda
might this source be attempting to achieve by publishing this information?
In addition to questions above there are many other ways to spot biases in media to better improve critical thinking skills when processing information relating politics and current events, but for this post I have decided to focus on these 3 major ones to keep this introductory post sweet and simple!
Critical thinking is a must during research. I agree - bias is everywhere in the media, whether it is a comment/opinion or the article in itself is biased. Bias can have a detrimental effect on viewers and can shape their beliefs. It is really important to detect bias and misinformation, so I really like your suggestions for viewers who are reading news articles. I also like to use websites that specialize in determining news articles as fact or fake. Great and informative post!
ReplyDeleteI also agree. People now a days can not just simply trust what they read online. There needs to be a good amount of background research before one begins to believe some article. This has been harder since many social media platforms are polluted with false information and fake news. Very helpful post!
